Nobody gets a dog thinking, “I can't wait to study their poop.” But here's the truth vets have known forever: your dog's poop is one of the fastest, cheapest health check-ups you'll ever get. It changes before your dog acts sick.

The problem? When the yard is covered in old piles, you can't tell today's from last week's, and you miss the warning signs. Here's what to look for, color by color.

What Healthy Dog Poop Looks Like

Healthy dog poop is usually chocolate brown, firm but not hard, shaped like a log, and easy to pick up without leaving much behind. A little variation is normal, especially after a food change or a new treat. The American Kennel Club suggests watching the “four C's”: color, consistency, coating and contents.

The Dog Poop Color Chart

  • Brown: Normal. Shades from tan to dark brown are usually fine.
  • Black or tarry: Can mean bleeding higher up in the digestive tract. Call your vet the same day.
  • Red streaks or blood: Fresh blood can point to irritation lower in the gut, parasites or a more serious problem. Call your vet, especially if it keeps happening.
  • Green: Often just a lot of grass eating, but it can also signal other issues. Watch it, and call your vet if it lasts.
  • Yellow or orange: Can mean food moved through too fast, or a liver or gallbladder issue. Call your vet if it continues.
  • Gray and greasy: Can point to a problem digesting fat, sometimes involving the pancreas. Worth a vet visit.
  • White specks: Little rice-like pieces can be tapeworm segments. Call your vet about deworming.

This chart is a guide, not a diagnosis. If your dog also seems tired, stops eating, is vomiting, or has diarrhea for more than a day or two, call your vet. Puppies and senior dogs can go downhill faster, so don't wait.

Consistency Matters Too

Too hard and crumbly can mean dehydration, which is common in Florida heat. Soft serve or watery can mean a diet change, stress, parasites or infection. A single soft stool after a new treat usually isn't a big deal. A pattern is. The AKC's guide to blood in dog stool is a good read if you ever see red.

Why A Clean Yard Makes This Easy

Here's the part nobody tells you: you can only read your dog's poop if you can tell which pile is fresh. In a yard full of old waste, warning signs blend right in. And some of what shows up in poop, like roundworm and hookworm eggs, can spread to other pets and people. Our guide on why dog poop is a bigger health risk than you think explains how.

When the yard is cleared every week, anything new stands out right away. That's also why we tell you if something looks off during a visit, so you can loop in your vet early.

Frequently Asked Questions

What color should healthy dog poop be?

Healthy dog poop is usually chocolate brown, firm and log-shaped. Tan to dark brown is generally normal.

When should I worry about my dog's poop color?

Call your vet the same day for black or tarry poop or visible blood. Also call for yellow, gray or greasy poop that lasts, white rice-like specks, or any change that comes with vomiting, tiredness or not eating.

Why is my dog's poop green?

Often it's from eating a lot of grass. If it lasts more than a day or two or your dog seems unwell, check with your vet.

Can I tell if my dog has worms from their poop?

Sometimes. Tapeworm segments look like small white rice-like pieces. Many worms and eggs can't be seen, so your vet may recommend a stool test.
